When reviewing your legal DNA test results here are a few things that’ll help understand your results a little bit better:
1. Always be sure that the laboratory lists their company accreditations on the report. That’s especially important with court-admissible legal testing.
2. You’ll notice a column labeled Locus or Loci. These are your actual DNA markers. These are the sections of your DNA the Ph.D. uses to compare one person’s genetic makeup to another person in efforts to determine a relationship. These Locus produce what is called an allele. The columns marked “allele” on the DNA test report contain numbers indicating the two alleles found at each locus (or one number if they are the same size). By rule of thumb if more than 3 allele combinations do not match the person is NOT related.
3. Next, you’ll have an interpretation of your results. This is where the Ph.D. writes a synopsis of what your report means and what the percentage of relationship is. That number can be in the form of a percentage or ratio. (Example 99.9% or 0 to 1)
4. Lastly, for all legal court-admissible results always make sure that a licensed notary from the laboratory signs your report. You’ll also see a signature of the Ph.D. confirming that the results are accurate.

Understanding your Face DNA test report is easy. Always keep in mind Face DNA Matching cannot be used in the court of law. We always suggest an actual mouth swab or blood draw test for court-admissible results.
On a Face Match DNA test report, you’ll notice two important columns. You’ll have a (TPM) Total Possible Match column and an (AML) Actual Match Location column.
The Total Possible Match column is the column that has the highest possible match range allowed. The Actual Match Location column is determined after comparing one person’s TPM to the other person’s TPM. That algorithm will give you the actual facial calculations of both people. Those two numbers are then compared, and an overall percentage of relationships is derived.
The idea behind Face Matching is to get over 50% of a match. If a person gets under 50% that likely would suggest that they do not share a relationship. If the number is over 50% it would strongly suggest a relationship. In either case, a recommendation to follow up with an actual DNA genetic test may be suggested by using either blood or mouth swab.
When purchasing the Pro Package not only will you have the Actual Match Locations determined but we’ll also consider your hereditary characteristics. For example, it’ll compare whether both people have a cleft chin, widow’s peak, dimples, freckles, and other facial features. It’ll also compare things like their hair color, their eye color, etc. A really cool feature about the Pro Package is our blood type testing chart. If you know the blood type of each person, we can compare them both to see if the blood types are compatible. This will assist in finding out if the two people are actually related.
